Navigation, Attention & Individual Differences

Much of navigation depends on deciding what information to trust and where to direct attention. People differ substantially in how they use maps, landmarks, and other navigation aids, especially when those cues are incomplete or unreliable. In collaboration with Barry Giesbrecht and Mary Hegarty, we use immersive VR to study these differences under controlled but demanding navigation conditions.

Our experiments combine freely moving VR with behavioral measures, eye tracking, and mobile EEG. We study how navigation aids influence attention and performance, how people adapt when guidance becomes unreliable, and how differences in spatial ability, strategy, and stress affect navigation.

Publications

We compared three common guidance techniques for immersive VR wayfinding: a directional arrow, a minimap, and a compass.

We examine whether stress exposure during environmental learning fosters resilience to stress in subsequent navigation or impairs learning.

We used immersive virtual reality to develop a novel behavioral paradigm to examine navigation under dynamically changing, high-stress situations.
